In this website you will find information and research on the topic of the sex trafficking of children broken up into three sections: Literature review, rhetorical analysis, and researched argument.
I have written a literature review discussing and comparing three sources of information on this topic. The first article I introduce is an article titled "The Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography” written by Maria Santos Pais who discusses the importance of all countries ratifying this convention (Pais, 2010). The second article I introduce in the literature review is Anne O'Reilley's "Child: The Next Push for Human Rights." O'Reilley explains to us the reason why children have become huge targets in the sex trafficking industry and why a child might be come a victim (O'Reilley, 1993). The third article I research in the literature review is by authors Deborah G. Wilson, William F. Walsh, and Sherilyn Kleuber titled "Trafficking in Human Beings: Training and Services Among US Law Enforcement Agencies.” These authors take a survey to settle the debate on whether federal law enforcement or local police departments should be primarily responsible for handling sex trafficking crimes (Wilson, Walsh, & Kleuber, 2006). The fourth and final article I reference is titled “The U.S. and the International Children's Rights Crusade: Leader or Laggard?” by Mary Ann Mason and she discusses where the United States stands on the topic of child rights considering the fact that they have not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Mason, 2005).
My rhetorical analysis takes an inside look on the documentary Born into Brothels. The documentary is about a photographer, Zana Briski, who goes to do research in a red light district in India (Briski and Kauffman, 2004). I analyze things said by the children about their living situations and the impact living in a brothel has on them.
My researched argument I reference some articles from my literature review along with counter arguments to create a strong and well thought out persuasion presentation. I discuss the influence the media has on society about the roles women play in the world today and how the media negatively portrays them. I also present information proving the importance of the United States ratifying the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
After researching this topic I have found that it is necessary for US citizens and citizens of the world to find it in themselves to either donate or volunteer to attempt to lessen the amount of children that fall victim to sex trafficking.
